New research suggests that self-disclosure can be used to increase acceptance of artificial intelligence technology, regardless of whether it’s human-like or not.
In a new study, participants showed more empathy toward an anthropomorphic artificial intelligence (A.I.) agent when it appeared to reveal personal information about itself in a chat with them. Kenhiro Tsumura of Japan’s Soho Graduate School of Science and Seiji Yamada of the National Institute of Informatics in Tokyo published these findings in the journal PLOS ONE on May 10, 2023.
The use of artificial intelligence in everyday life has multiplied, as has the interest in research on factors that may contribute to people’s trust and acceptance of artificial intelligence agents. Previous research has shown that people are more likely to accept AI products if they resonate with them. To test this idea, the researchers conducted an online experiment in which participants engaged in a text-based chat with an online AI agent that was visually represented by a human-like illustration or an anthropomorphic robot illustration. The chat involves a scenario in which the participants and the agent are co-workers taking a lunch break at the agent’s workplace. In every conversation, agents appeared to self-disclose personal information that was highly relevant to work, information less relevant to hobbies, or no personal information.
The final analysis included data from 918 participants whose empathy for the AI agent was assessed using a standard empathy questionnaire. The researchers found that highly job-related self-disclosures by AI agents were associated with greater empathy among participants compared with less relevant self-disclosures. Lack of self-disclosure was associated with suppressed empathy. The agent’s appearance as a human or an anthropomorphic robot was not significantly associated with empathy levels.
These findings suggest that self-disclosure by AI agents may indeed resonate with humans, which may help inform the future development of AI tools.
