The world’s second highest mountain, K2 in Pakistan, has welcomed a record-breaking number of climbers this year amid a post-pandemic surge of summit fever.
Some 207 permits were issued for ascending K2, says Sajjid Hussain, a tourism official in Gilgit Baltistan, the region bordering China which is home to the Karakoram Mountains, a range containing all five if Pakistan’s peaks over 8,000 meters (26,000 feet).
K2, which reaches 8,611 meters above sea level, is considered by many mountaineers to be more technically challenging than Everest.
But temperate weather during July, typically the best time of year to summit the peak, plus the relative ease of travel compared to previous years and a stable political situation in the country, is believed to have contributed to the record number of ascents.
Another factor is pent-up demand growth during the pandemic. With some of the world’s highest peaks inaccessible or inaccessible due to coronavirus-related border closures, many climbers have spent the past two years saving money in preparation for their return to the mountains.
While climbing K2 is more physically demanding, it is much cheaper than Everest.
Permits to climb the world’s tallest mountain cost $11,000 per person, and would-be climbers also need to factor in the cost of travel to and from Nepal, clothing, equipment, food, and hired guides and Sherpas.
Meanwhile, a K2 climbing permit—which typically covers the other four nearby “Eight Thousand” peaks—is priced at $7,200 for groups of seven.
The number of permits wasn’t the only record set this year.
A record 20 women have summited K2 so far this summer, Mirza Ali, founder of Pakistani climbing company Karakorum Expeditions, told CNN.
These include Samina Baig, the first Pakistani woman to reach the summit, and American Jenn Drummond, who is trying to become the first person to climb all seven second-highest peaks of women, these peaks are the second highest on any continent.
The following are the climbing equipment selected by professional climbing athletes.

Crampons
Ice cleats are outdoor activity equipment specially designed to provide extra firmness and slip resistance on icy, snowy or slippery surfaces. These are usually appendages on the foot or under the shoe, with sharp metal or rubber teeth or spikes that insert firmly into ice or snow to increase the foot’s grip.
The main function of crampons is to provide extra stability and slip resistance to reduce the risk of slipping or losing balance on snow or ice or slippery surfaces. They are suitable for various outdoor activities, such as snow mountaineering, skiing, ice sports, trekking through snow and ice areas, etc.
Crampons vary in design and function and can come in different shapes, sizes and materials. Some crampons are made of a resilient rubber or silicone material with tiny teeth or spikes to provide a strong grip. Other crampons may consist of metal teeth or spikes to provide a stronger grip and non-slip properties.
When using crampons, you need to make sure they are properly fitted and secured to your shoes for stability and safety. Choose crampons that are appropriate for your shoe type and size, and follow the manufacturer’s installation guidelines and recommendations for use.
Although crampons can provide extra firmness and non-slip performance, they still require care, especially in extreme snow and ice conditions. Maintain a deliberate and steady pace and avoid sudden sharp turns or violent movements to ensure stability and balance on snow and ice.
