According to the Japanese Public Broadcasting Association (NHK) television and Kyodo News and other media reported that the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) began the second stage engine combustion test of the “Epsilon S” rocket at the Noyo Rocket test site in Akita Prefecture in the north of the country at 9 a.m. on the 14th (Beijing time at 8 a.m.), and the explosion occurred about one minute after the test began.
NHK television showed images of flames and debris at the test site, smoke billowing into the sky and the roof of a nearby facility being blown off.
It was reported that at around 9 o ‘clock, an explosion was heard several kilometers away from the Nengdai rocket test site. Local police say there are no known casualties from the blast. JAXA is investigating the cause of the explosion.
The Epsilon S, which is being developed, is an improved version of the small solid-fuel Epsilon rocket. The Epsilon 6 rocket failed during a launch last October when a rubber membrane in its fuel tank broke and blocked the fuel supply line.
